Tennis players can gage their level of skill on our tennis court which is in need of resurfacing. Youngsters could catch their first trout in our well stocked dam and fly fishing enthusiasts can enjoy fishing in the lake or the surrounding rivers. Horse rides are a favourite with the children who are accompanied by a guide.
Mountain bikers can enjoy cross country trails. A picnic basket can be ordered and enjoyed anywhere on the property or surrounding mountains. At the end of the day, you can enjoy a well deserved refreshment at the pub, play some pool or a game of darts or relax around the fire.
Campers can make use of all amenities and enjoy the great outdoors.
The Peak Coffee Bar
The Peak Coffee Bar offers magnificent coffee and scrumptious meals to satisfy any thirst or hungry tummy.
Horse rides are a favourite with the children who will be accompanied by a guide. The more experienced riders may bring their own horses and take to the mountains where they can enjoy dips in our refreshing rock pools, picnics at the river or overnight on the mountains.
There are additional fees for housing horses on the property and these trips will need to be prearranged.
The more intrepid adventurers can enquire about organised rides into Lesotho “the Mountain Kingdom” which are led by an experienced, reputable local tour guide, who lives in the district. St Bernards Peak is the start and finish point for these tours into Lesotho.
Hanging at the Pool
Relax on lazy summer days, lounging at our refreshing pool and bask in the breath taking views of the surrounding mountains and lake.
Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, a birding experience at St. Bernard’s Peak Mountain Lodge is sure to be a highlight of your trip to the Drakensberg. The birdlife is diverse and abundant in this part of South Africa, with over 200 species of birds recorded in the region, including some endemic species. The lodge is situated in a prime location to spot some of these fascinating feathered friends, with its sprawling property, surrounded by untouched natural backdrops, making it an ideal habitat for many species. Birding enthusiasts can explore the many trails surrounding the lodge, including the scenic mountain trails with panoramic views of the valley. You may spot the stunning African Fish Eagle, the iconic Drakensberg Rockjumper, the Cape Vulture, and many other species of eagles, buzzards, and falcons.
A Birding Check list is available at reception for you to try your skills at spotting all the birds listed. You are also welcome to add any birds to our list.
Guests are encouraged to bring their bikes to enjoy endless dirt road and mountain trails which families and friends can enjoy together. There is plenty of space for youngsters to ride their bikes, so don’t forget to pack them.
Whether you’re a serious hiker or prefer a more leisurely stroll, St Bernards Peak is the ideal place to gage your fitness at high altitude, enjoy the outdoors and magnificent mountain views. We are a popular choice for hiking groups with our cottages or campsite accommodation that have access to our coffee bar and pub for light or hearty meals.
We also take pride in hosting the start or finish of some major annual events, such as the Grand Traverse which takes about 2 weeks. The journey starts in the Northern Drakensberg and ends at St Bernards Peak, which is a 290km trek with a total elevation of 11441 meters. It is a privilege for us to provide the first hot meals and showers after this hike.
There are several Day hikes which our guests love to tackle. These include a fairly steep, one hour hike to the Bushman Painting caves and the Bamboo pools hike has natural pools of water to relax in along the way while enjoying the waterfalls, the beautiful landscape and wild proteas.
There are other hikes which are available. Ask the receptionist for options.
Lake St Bernard is situated a stone’s throw away from us and is a well known and sort after fly fishing destination. A minimal fishing fee gives our guests access to these waters and to surrounding rivers. St Bernards Peak has a small dam stocked with trout which is ideal for teaching youngsters to fish.
A picnic is more than a meal, it is time with family while enjoying spectacular views all around you. Book your picnic basket with us.
